Standard 11

Standard #11: Technology Standards for Teachers
Effective teachers model and apply the National Educational Technology Standards for Students
(NETS•S) as they design, implement, and assess learning experiences to engage students and
improve learning; enrich professional practice; and provide positive models for students, colleagues,
and the community.

Artifact 1: Artifact 1 is a Tik Tok made with the idea of spreading information in the form of a P.S.A. In the span of 1 minute, a quick story is told about the consequences of posting whatever you want on social media. Called a digital tattoo, it’s the concept that once something is put out onto the internet, it can never truly be deleted or erased, similar to a tattoo.

Reflection: I chose this for my artifact because I believe it’s engaging and provides a good message at the same time. The artifact demonstrates technology standard 11 by designing a video idea, and creating that video in a relatable and engaging form. Because of the engagement of the video, it helps to improve learning and gives a positive model for others. It not only shows an example of what not to put out on the internet, but explains why.

Artifact 2: Artifact 2 is a children’s book about adding numbers. It’s a very simple online book that covers the very basics of addition. It has colorful pages and large font to make the math problems look less challenging. The book also uses pencils to add in place of numbers for some problems to help those visualize the math taking place.

Reflection: I chose this artifact because I am currently working in an elementary school. Although I want to teach at the High school level when I graduate, my experience so far has been with children just beginning to learn basic skills such as math. It also demonstrates teaching standard 11 since I designed a math book that can assess a students proficiency at math or teach them the basics for those who aren’t as proficient. It’s a digital book with colors and items to boost engagement.

Technology mission statement: From the beginning of the semester, my expectations on learning and overall enjoyment for my classes were at an all time low. Spending half my college at home working on assignments and traveling to campus multiple times a day made stirring up any little motivation almost impossible. I was relatively quiet and I went with the flow during my classes, my participation is directly matched with my enjoyment I’ve come to learn. For the beginning of the semester, that was my plan. Just go with the assignments and achieve a passing grade. This mindset was all I could allow myself with the way this year was going. That was until I started taking EDU 110. The atmosphere of the classroom allowed me to start to enjoy classes again, and in turn allowed me to start learning. From then on, whether in zoom discussions, or going over various ways of using technology, I was able to learn.

One of the main things I learned and began to understand myself was how technology is playing such a large role in school systems. Technology will only be incorporated more, so going into the workforce as a teacher myself, I need to be well equipped and prepared to use the technology available for me when the time comes. When covering the various tools for technology this semester, I’ve started to think about how I want my class to be run. I know I want my classroom to be enjoyable and as an english teacher, work can start to feel repetitive rather quickly if everything is done on paper. Incorporating modules that have interaction and less old school reading and reporting, I hope to create an environment like that by incorporating technology into everyday assignments.

Transitioning to a more technology centered class may also provide more benefits than the way of just learning too. I’ve always struggled with maintaining organization. As a student I was always stuffing papers into my bag, never to be seen again. Having a classroom where work is submitted digitally will help me with my organization and allow easy access for assignments, schedule, announcements, or anything else I might want to share all in one place. It should also allow students to review anything that may have been covered previously, or just see what assignments they have due. For students who struggle with maintaining organization, and those already efficient at it, moving to a technology space where everything is accessible online will make both the classroom, my work, and the students work better and more manageable.

There is many ways I can use technology to enhance the learning and experience for my students in the future. In a world that is evolving to have technology as a necessity rather than for fun shows how far the world has come, and that includes in the way we educate. By incorporating different online modules, it helps to engage and improve student learning. Using an online website for assignments and information makes it easier for myself and other students with organization. From this class I’ve learned of many ways in which I can incorporate technology into the classroom, whether its to help with organization or teach the lesson itself. I know in my future I will be using the technology I have been taught about to teach others.
